love this deck
I spoiled myself and built another little kitchen table mill deck with all Duskmorne cards and I've been goldfishing (Drawing sample hands and playing a few turns with them to get a feel for the deck) it and it rocks!
Bit of a content warning, Duskmorne is a horror set so the art for some of the cards has some body-horror so just letting you know if you don't wanna engage with that at all!
Like my other starter decks this one is small and sweet with one rare (The Mindskinner, not the best in slot but best for the vibe we're going for) and it's mostly free of counters and tokens, though this one does use some stun counters, but I think one type of counter is fine, especially if we aren't spreading them around too much. This deck has some really nice play patterns!
Any hand that starts with a Crab, a non-crab one drop, and a Fear of Isolation is super nice, since we can use the other one drop to get our Isolation in and get additional Crab triggers to mill our opponent! The Fear of Isolation's in the deck are actually pulling way more than their weight, since they effectively give us extra copies of any of our cards, so our soft removal can pack way more of a punch when it just keeps coming, or even having our Isolation's get us back our Meat Locker//Drowned Diner, so we can lock our opponents creatures down longer and draw more cards with the Diner Side of the card! And keep in mind every time we rebuy a card like that, we're getting more crab triggers, so even if you have only two crabs in play, you can do things like go Pool, Isolation, Pool, and you'll have bounced two of your opponents creatures, and milled your opponent for twelve!
The Room cards in the deck shine so well here too! There have been so many test games where I draw a land with an otherwise empty hand and instead of being filled with dread like other decks, I can usually drop the land, and open the Drowned Diner side of the Meat locker and load up on a couple cards, which also triggers the Crabs! And those cards are likely cards that either interact with my opponents creatures, or maybe a copy of Fear of Isolation that can return my Meat Locker//Diner and lock my opponents creature down with more stun counters, and then unlock the Diner again for more card draw! And the Crabs just keep triggering because other than the lands, they're the only non-enchantments in the whole deck!
It is worth keeping in mind this is meant to be played against other simple 40 card decks (though the idea of converting this into a full standard deck is tempting, if only standard saw any play around here), and I don't expect it to beat any other true constructed decks. It's basically a perfect draft pool, but it's super fun!
Magic rocks, and if you play, you should totally make a nice simple deck like this, that you can share with people and build for super cheap! Commander may be the most popular format, but decks like these can be just as, if not more, creative and are way better for teaching new players! And since the decks are so cheap to build, you can just tell a new player to keep the deck, do whatever they like with it (but not like, throw it away or sell it, that would be rude), and since the decks are so small and simple you can just jam some games while your on like a lunch break, or you're at a coffee shop and need to pass the time. It's fun and I'm gonna keep doing it and keep sharing the fun <3
